A simple way to list the pages that already get impressions but few clicks, so you know which pages to fix first.

What this is

An article by SEO specialist Mike Ginley that shows how to rank your own pages by "easy win" potential. The idea: a page that already shows up in Google search results, but is rarely clicked, can often be improved with a small fix. That is cheaper than writing a new page.

The method in five steps

  • Pull your Google Search Console data. The article prefers the bulk export to BigQuery because it holds more rows than the normal connection, but the normal connection works as a start.
  • In Looker Studio, build a table with one row per page: total clicks, total impressions, average position, average click rate (CTR) and the number of search queries the page appears for.
  • Add colour rules that flag a page when its CTR is under 1%, or it appears for 10 or more queries, or it has at least 100 impressions, 10 queries and a CTR under 1%.
  • Change those cut-offs to match your own site's averages.
  • Open each flagged page, look at the queries it already ranks for, and decide the fix.
  • Fixes the article suggests

Better title and meta description, adding the missing keywords, internal links, repairing broken links, refreshing old content, speeding up the page, and sharing the page again through social media or email.

    Tools mentioned

Google Search Console, BigQuery, Looker Studio, Screaming Frog, SEMrush and Google PageSpeed Insights.

    Our note for early-stage startups

A new site may not have enough impressions or queries to trigger the default cut-offs, so start with lower numbers. Most of the fixes are standard SEO practice; the value here is the simple way of choosing what to fix first.
